Need Forage This Year to Fatten Your Bass?
We have just experienced another winter with temperatures cold enough to cause threadfin shad mortalities. Although we did not have as many individual days of record cold as last year, the total number of days below freezing was greater. Many ponds containing threadfin shad experienced mortalities before the ponds actually iced. Prolonged water temperatures below 38 F stress threadfin to a point of causing mortality.
It appears that the majority of the threadfin shad will be delivered during the summer this year, the same as last year. These shad will spawn during the summer, reestablishing the threadfin population and providing additional food during the fall.
Fingerling bluegill stocked at a rate of up to 2,000 per acre can provide a more rapid response if stocked during late February through March. These fingerlings will be sexually mature by the end of May and will begin spawning, creating additional food for the bass. In lakes where we have stocked with this method, we have observed an increase of forage-size bluegill and a significant increase in condition factor of the bass the within a year. We have a supply of bluegill at present, but these will be sold on a first come basis. Discounts will be available on orders larger than 10,000.
